Mommy Moment | Summer Learning
Hello and welcome to another moment with Shona! Boy have I been a busy bee!! I am happy to be speaking with you today! How was your weekend? I will get into my weekend adventure on Thursday, but for today’s mommy moment, I’m going over some summer lessons I’m doing with my 3 older kids!
I started my day off with a quick 30 minute dance workout called Country Heat. Right as I was ending, son Jeremiah greeted me. Then everyone else gradually woke up after him lol! I told them that we would be doing schoolwork today, so they need to get dressed for the day & not fool around while they ate breakfast. I don’t know about your kiddos, but mine always find other things to do while at the table!
Let me paint a picture for you…. my kids would find a toy that they had to put away at that very moment. They would notice the T.V. needed to be turned off. Or they would just goof around at the table and not sit properly, which causes food all over the floor instead of in their mouths. I’m sure I’m not the only momma who gets totally annoyed by this. Lol!
Anywho, my kids managed to finish eating at a decent hour today and we got right to work! I wanted to focus on handwriting, phonics, forming sentences & Bible reading covering the topic of love.
A’Nyah & Jeremiah {7.5 & 9 years old} practiced their handwriting first. Jeremiah practiced lowercase letters & Niyah had upper & lowercase. While they were writing, I had Rèinah {7 years old} was working on sorting 2nd grade words. I saved all of Niyah’s second grade spelling words she got from school because I knew I would need them for practice during the Summer.
My toddler Lovèah was working on ABC Mouse while her siblings were working. I couldn’t have her running around or sitting in front of the T.V. watching her favorite Minions movie. I am actually cutting her back on T.V. so having her do ABC Mouse was perfect!
After everyone was finished with their first lesson, they moved onto their phonics & sentences. They read 4 spelling words then created four sentences using those words. I told them they needed to check their work to make sure they spelled everything correctly & to be sure it was neatly written. If it wasn’t neatly written, guess what? Yup, they will have to re-write it. Lol! You can easily find these phonics cards at the dollar store! No need to spend a bucket full of cash.
While I was checking Rèinah’s work, I noticed she wasn’t completing her letters. So I had her practice writing the alphabet (upper & lowercase) one time. Then she went back to her schoolwork and made some small corrections.
In the Tyree house, games don’t get pulled out until schoolwork is done. So, after everyone was done with their work, I let them go on the Wii & youtube kids for 30 minutes. I set the timer over the stove so when they heard the beeping noise, they knew it was time to end all videos & games. After the buzzer went off, it was time to read a book for for at least 20 minutes.
Below are some of their favorite books! I highly recommend them because they are quite funny!
We will do our Bible reading a bit later before my husband comes home. We will be focusing on Matthew 19:19 which reads, “ honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself.” I want my children to always show love and respect towards my husband & I. I also want them to know that the greatest commandment is to love one another.
I would love to hear what your kids are learning this Summer! Be sure to drop a comment below!
Until next time, “laugh hard, love harder, capture each moment & sprinkle a little joy in someone else’s life.” – XO Shona
